Teacher Pleaser

By Carol Bainbridge, About.com

Definition: Teacher pleasers are children who do what their teachers ask because they want to make the teachers happy. While that is ordinarily a good thing, it can be a problem when a gifted child is not being academically challenged and is not happy with school. These children will not complain to the teacher since complaints could make the teacher unhappy.

Teacher pleasers usually get high grades and rarely have behavior problems. This can make it difficult for parents to get appropriate academic services since the child seems to be doing well. However, these children, like most unchallenged gifted children, may not develop good study skills or learn how to put forth effort since neither is required when the work they do is too easy for them.

Teacher pleasers tend to be extrinsically motivated, which means the approval of the teacher can be enough to motivate them to do work they may find boring or tedious.
Also Known As: complacent child
