Many parents work hard to get their shy child to make more friends and get out and socialize more. What some of them don't realize, though, is that what they believe is shyness is actually introversion. The two are not the same. An introvert can also be shy, but that's not what introversion is.
It's understandable that parents would want to make sure their child is comfortable in social settings and able to make friends. However, pushing introverts to be social when they want to be alone doesn't help them. They need time alone to "recharge." If you are the parent of an introvert, exactly what should you do? Fortunately, raising an introvert doesn't take any special skills. It mostly takes understanding, support, and acceptance.
