Can you recognize the gifted traits in Harry Potter and his friends? Can you recognize the gifted themes? I bet you can if you think about it and reflect on the giftedness in the Harry Potter series.
Since there does seem to be a connection between Harry, his world, and the world of giftedness, I am especially fond of the Harry's story. I love the lessons the story can teach us and our kids. These lessons are about love, honor, friendship, loyalty, bravery and more. And they are all positive ones.
One of my favorite lessons, that is so appropriate for gifted kids, comes from what Dumbledore once said to Harry: "It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."
This is a great lesson for gifted kids who can get caught up in thinking that it's their abilities that sets them apart from others. But they aren't. A person is defined not by his abilities alone, but by how he chooses to use those abilities. Even aside from the abilities, a person is defined by how he chooses to live his life.
The Harry Potter story may have come to an end, but the lessons it has to offer are enduring ones.

The gifted (to paraphrase Rick’s line about Captain Renault in Casablanca) are just like anyone else only more so… for well and ill. As one approaches the right end of the bell curve, the distribution of any particular quality flattens. Hollingworth found that in IQ 180-ish children whether they were creative, moderately creative or not creative at all broke down into equal thirds. Goodness/badness, resilience/lack-thereof… just character generally, etc. is the same. It all depends upon the person and how they choose to live their life.
