Summer Toys for Gifted Children

By , About.com Guide

Gifted children can become easily bored with toys. The key is finding toys that are challenging, interesting, or help kids burn excess energy. When the weather is warm and pleasant, we also want toys for our children that they can play with outside. Here are some toys that many gifted children will enjoy.

Learning Resources Lowercase Alphabet Sand Molds, Set Of 26

If your child loves letters and words, then this set is a good buy. The one downside to this set is that it contains only lowercase letters, so your child can't spell out names perfectly correctly. Most kids won't mind, but the perfectionists among us might. Still, a child who loves words will enjoy creating letters and spelling words out of sand.

Learning Resources Numbers and Operations Sand Molds, Set Of 26

If you have a child who loves numbers and math, this set of sand molds are a must. Why have the usual star and circle molds, when your child can make as many numbers as he or she desires? Your child can even create number problems since the set includes a plus, a minus and an equal sign.

Crayola Sidewalk Paint Tray

It's always a good idea to encourage our children to explore their artistic side. This is true whether they already love to draw, paint, and color, or we would like to give them the opportunity to start. The Crayola Sidewalk Paint Tray provides children with the opportunity to develop and nurture their artistic creativity. This tray comes with three bottles of paint, a brush, a paint roller, and three sticks of sidewalk chalk. All the children need is their imagination, creativity, and a sidewalk or driveway. For ages four and up.

Backyard Ballistics

Don't let the name of this toy mislead you. It isn't about shooting things. It's actually a book about the science of projectiles. It provides instructions for conducting experiments using the laws of science, math, and thermodynamics. Although the book stresses the importance of safety and discusses safety measures, the experiments should be done with close adult supervision. The recommended age for this book is eleven and up.

Young Scientists: Science on a Nature Walk

This nature kit is wonderful for kids who love nature or for parents who want to introduce their children to the natural world. Kids can conduct fun field experiments like finding animal tracks and turning them into fossils or making a bug house. For ages four to twelve.

Out-of-This-World Astronomy

Help your child explore the universe with this book. It is full of beautiful images and answers to many questions a curious gifted child might have about the night sky. It also helps children learn to use a telescope or binoculars to study the stars and planets. The fifty projects should keep a child busy for some time! For children eight to twelve.
