Dumbing Down

By Carol Bainbridge, About.com

Definition: Dumbing down is a term used to refer to the hiding of natural intellectual abililities. Gifted children often feel different from the other kids and sometimes don't feel accepted. In order to fit in with the other kids, some gifted children will not do as well as they can in school. They may intentionally miss questions on a test, fail to turn in homework, or say they don't know the answer to a question if the teacher calls on them when they know it quite well.

Dumbing Down is also used to refer to the weakening of a school or course curriculum. Requirements are made less challenging and less demanding so that children are better able to pass tests and complete assignments satisfactorily.
