My son is now 21, but I remember very, very well his year in third grade. It was the year I considered homeschooling, even though I was a single mom working full time. I actually went farther than just considering homeschooling; I was making plans. Unfortunately, they didn't work out and I had to leave my son in school.
I realize that homeschooling is not for everyone, but it is certainly the best option for many parents. Not too long ago, I ran across an article in the New Straits Times in Malaysia. In it, the author said that the government should assess the "parents' preparedness and qualifications to ensure they provide quality education for their children." The author also suggested that "the government monitor and assess the development of homeschooled children at least half-yearly."
Maybe it's me, but I don't think I like this idea. The problems I had with my son in third grade were in large part due to the improper and inaccurate assessment of his abilities and needs. What do you think? Take the poll and add your comments!
