Emotional Outbursts at School

Tuesday January 6, 2009
Tantrums aren't unusual in small children, even small gifted children.  However, few things are more puzzling to a parent of a gifted child when the child who has never had behavior problems at home exhibits them at school.  That's what happened to bellmom627's son. She wrote about the experience in the forum:
"They [the school] called in a behavioral specialist because he was throwing tantrums in which he was flailing his arms, kicking his legs, and rolling on the floor screaming. He had never done that at home. Ever. The last straw was this past Thursday when he got in the car and was telling me a story.  I hadn't said anything, hadn't interrupted in any way, and he started throwing his head back against his car seat and kicking his legs and screaming 'Don't interrupt me!!!!' ... I reached back and put my hand on his leg and said 'It's okay, Jonah, school is over now.'  and he leaned his head against the window and started to cry.  It was horrifying."
I wonder how many parents had a similar experience.  I know I did.  At first it's horrifying, but it's also frightening and heartbreaking.
